Microsoft Surface Mini release date could come this summer

The Microsoft Surface Mini could be released this summer after all, or so says a new report.

Many expected the Surface Mini to be launched on May 20 at that “small gathering”, but Microsoft instead unveiled the Microsoft Suface Pro 3.

Rumours of the Surface Mini then died down a bit, especially after reports Microsoft had decided against launching the smaller tablet hours before the event.

However, according to notorious and accurate tech tipster @evleaks, the Surface Mini is “back in production, in anticipation of a summer release”.

Perhaps then, Microsoft has pencilled in a launch for some time later this month or in August, but currently we’ve had no information as to when that could happen.

Previous rumours tipped the Surface Mini to have a 7.5-inch 1440 x 1080p full HD display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. It could pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, rather than Microsoft’s usual Intel CPU choice.

Microsoft accidentally mentioned the Surface Mini in the user manual for the Surface Pro 3, giving away some of its features.

“You’ll pair your new pen with Surface Mini a little later during setup,” explained one section of the official Microsoft manual.

The document also explained the device’s strong OneNote compatibility and the ability to use the rotation lock features found with Windows 8 for the device.

Currently there aren’t many specs rumours about the potential iPad Mini 2 Retina rival, but it should run Windows RT rather than the full Windows 8.1 desktop operating system.
