Microsoft Surface Mini and Surface 3 could launch soon

Microsoft could be set to launch its much delayed Surface Mini tablet, as well as the Surface 3, before the Christmas period.

Pretty much everyone with an interest in the matter was expecting Microsoft to launch a Surface Mini 8-inch Windows 8 tablet on May 20. The company had previous announced a special launch event that seemed geared up (or at least themed) specifically with that in mind.

However, the company only launched the Surface Pro 3 at the event. It eventually emerged that the company’s top brass had decided to cut the Surface Mini at the 11th hour.

According to a new snippet of information, Microsoft could be set to finally launch its 8-inch Surface Mini tablet for the 2014 Christmas season. What’s more, it could be joined by a Surface 3 device.

TK Tech News recently tweeted: “Sources claim surface mini to launch with surface 3 before holidays. Limited supply on mini”

We might finally see what Microsoft’s vision of a compact tablet looks like, then, but only in small quantities.

Also intriguing is the suggestion that Microsoft is planning a Surface 3. Just to be clear, this would be a more affordable, compact tablet running on the cut-down Windows RT. The previous devices in this budget range were intended as direct rivals to the iPad, rather than the Windows 8 tablet-laptop hybrid of the Pro range.

We should find out soon whether these claims are accurate, as Microsoft will need to announce the Surface Mini and Surface 3 pretty sharpish if they’re to launch for the holiday season.
