Microsoft Surface Laptop specs and design
“Students are asking for a laptop. They’re asking for a Surface Laptop,” said Panos Panay, CVP of Microsoft Surface, describing the thin-and-light ultrabook, which features a 7th-generation Intel Core processor (i5 and i7 options available) and a screen with 3.4 million pixels. He added that the Surface laptop is “50% faster than the MacBook Air”.
The Surface Laptop features a 13.5-inch PixelSense LCD touchscreen display with a 3:2 aspect ratio. It weighs just 2.76 pounds, and boasts a tapered design that ranges from 9.9mm at the front to 14.47mm at the back.
Microsoft is claiming an incredible 14.5-hour battery life, and revealed that the top-spec model includes a 1TB PCIe solid state drive. The basic version comes with an Intel Core i5 (7th-gen) CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD.

It also features an Alcantara-covered keyboard, and sports a USB port, a Surface power connector, and a mini DisplayPort – but there’s no USB Type C connection, unfortunately.
There aren’t any visible speaker grilles or holes; instead, the sound is integrated beneath the keyboard so that audio is projected vertically from behind the keys.

“This is our complete solution for education,” said Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Executive VP of Windows and Devices.
The whole Surface Laptop and Windows 10S proposition is a clear attempt for Microsoft to reduce Google’s and Apple’s dominance in the education market.
With Chrome OS, Google has been able to gain massive market share using Chromebook devices, which are typically quick, attractive, and very reasonably priced. With Windows 10 S, Microsoft will be able to better compete using third-party manufacturers who will license out the technology onto their own devices.
Meanwhile, the Surface Laptop will provide a way for Microsoft to attract customers who would normally purchase a MacBook Air. Devices like the Microsoft Surface Pro and Surface Book don’t necessarily tick that box, given their lofty pricing and high-spec hardware.
At the event, Microsoft made much of the usefulness of both Windows 10 S and the Surface Laptop in terms of education, promising that cheaper and lighter hardware and software offerings would help “democratise” tech in schools.
“Technology should help not hinder teacher’s work in the classroom. Teachers have constant demands on their time,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. “This is a top priority we are focused on at Microsoft.”
He said Microsoft’s new software was designed “so teachers spend less time focused on technology, and more time doing what they love doing: inspiring students”.
