A top Microsoft executive has assured customers that the company remains committed to Windows 10 Mobile.
It hasn’t been a great few years for Windows Phone users. After Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 failed to gain traction against iOS and Android, Windows 10 Mobile landed late last year with a whimper.
However, Microsoft’s executive vice president of the Windows and devices group, Terry Myerson, insists that the platform remains in the company’s plans.
In an email to executives and partners picked up by Windows Central, Myerson wrote: “Let me be very clear: We are committed to deliver Windows 10 on mobile devices with small screen running ARM processors.”
Myerson also revealed that the company was working on “development of our next generation products,” and insisted that the company intends to “support the Windows 10 Mobile platform for many years.”
The reason such an email was necessary is that Microsoft hasn’t appeared particularly bothered about Windows 10 Mobile to date.
First, Windows Phone didn’t seem to form a part of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s mid-2015 company mission statement.
Also, Windows 10 Mobile itself trailed the general launch of Windows 10 by several months, despite the whole point being that this was a continuous cross-platform experience.

When the first Windows 10 Mobile flagship phone eventually arrived towards the end of the year, we got the mediocre Lumia 950. There’s still no sign of the Surface Phone that everyone seems to agree is needed, either.
Finally, Terry Myerson himself let slip that Windows 10 Mobile was “not the core of where I hope to generate developer interest over the next year,” and offered the frank view that “If you wanted to reach a lot of phone customers, Windows Phone isn’t the way to do it”.

Add in tanking Lumia sales, and you can see why Microsoft might feel the need to reassure its partners concerning its mobile plans.
