While Windows 10 is rolling out to PC users around the world, the company’s Lumia loyalists won’t get their hands on the new software until later this year.
However, there’s good news today for those still rocking a Windows Phone handset; the company has announced the list of smartphones that’ll be granted access to Windows 10 Mobile first.
The full list consists of: Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL Lumia 735 Lumia 830 Lumia 930.
On the company website (via ZDnet), Microsoft wrote: “Get ready for exciting new Windows 10 features on your Lumia. Take care of everyday tasks faster with an improved Action Center, enjoy a distraction-free reading experience with the Microsoft Edge browser, and do more on the move with universal apps like Maps, Calendar, and Photos.”
Microsoft hasn’t offered any further indication of when the new OS will begin rolling out to smartphone owners, but these devices will be the ones at the front of the queue.
Of course, any Lumia owners are already rocking the Windows 10 Mobile Technical Preview, with Microsoft making it available on over 35 handsets.
When the OS eventually comes out of preview, every day consumers will also be able to take advantage of Universal apps and the new Continuum tool.
The former will see the interoperability of apps on mobile and desktop platforms improved dramatically. The latter will allow Windows 10 Mobile owners to effectively turn their smartphone into a desktop PC by plugging it into a monitor and computing accessories.
Microsoft’s commitment to smartphones as a going concern has come under question in recent weeks. The firm has laid off thousands of employees and written off $7.6 billion in losses from the ill-fated acquisition of Nokia’s devices division.
As such, only a handful of Lumia devices are thought to be on the company’s roadmap going forward.
