Microsoft recalls over two million Surface Pro power cables

Update: Microsoft has confirmed that over two million power cords are being recalled, in response to 56 separate reports of overheating.

Original article (20/01/2016):

Microsoft is recalling a number of Surface Pro power cables following a number of reports of
overheating.

The overheating issues appear to have affected a small number of older models in the older Surface Pro range. The recently released Microsoft Surface Pro 4 doesn’t appear to have been affected.

“As a result of damage caused by AC power cords being wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time, a very small proportion of Surface Pro customers have reported issues with their AC power cord. We will be releasing details of how customers can obtain a free replacement cable shortly,” Microsoft told ZDNet.

This followed a report from Channelnomics Europe claiming that Microsoft would be issuing a voluntary recall on AC power units supplied with the Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, and Surface Pro 3 devices sold before July 2015.

According to a Microsoft spokesperson, this recall will apply worldwide. It’s known that US customers will be provided with a free power chord exchange for devices sold before March 2015.

Specifics on the recall and how to claim on it elsewhere in the world will apparently be made available on a Microsoft website soon.
