Microsoft officially announces Windows 10
It's Windows 10!

Microsoft has officially announced the Windows 10 (yes, ten) operating system at a special event on Tuesday evening.

The firm has surprisingly decided to skip the heavily-tipped Windows 9 name in order to go straight for the Windows 10 monicker.

Microsoft said the software is scheduled to encompass the firm’s desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone platforms with the OS delivering ‘the right experience at the right time.’

The OS will present users with a different experience depending on the platform they’re using, but the same Windows 10 code will run across all of its product lines.

“One product family. One platform. One store.”

Windows boss Terry Myerson said: “We’re delivering one application platform. One store, one way for applications to be discovered, purchased and updated across all of these devices.”

“Windows 10 will be our most comprehensive platform ever," Myerson added.

We’re early on in the announcement, but Microsoft began by outlining the benefits for Enterprise users rather than consumers. It is touting its familiarity, compatibility and productivity features, plus the customised store and the ability for users to protect corporate data.
