Nokia Lumia 830 goes on sale: high-end camera, mid-range price

Microsoft has confirmed that the Nokia Lumia 830 will go on sale today, Friday 3 October.

The Nokia Lumia 830 will be available widely, selling at EE, Vodafone, Tesco and Amazon.

Aimed squarely at the mid-range phone buyer, the phone will be available for free on contracts of £24.99 a month and above. Alternatively, you can grab one SIM-free for £325.

The phone offers much of DNA of the Nokia Lumia 930, but in a slimmer, cheaper package.

At just 8.5mm thick, the Lumia 830 is among the slimmest Lumia phones to date.

The design fits in well with other Lumia-series devices, though. Like the Lumia 930, it has aluminium sides, but a plastic rear.

In this phone, the plastic back pops off rather than bring locked in place – a design trait common in Nokia’s lower-end and mid-range phones.

Aside from a fairly accessible price, the lead feature of the Nokia Lumia 830 is its camera.

While the 10-megapixel sensor is a good deal lower-res than the high-end Lumia 930, which has a 20-megapixel camera, it also offers optical image stabilisation for much better-than-average low-light performance.

The Nokia Lumia 830 is also one of the first phones to launch with Cortana, the Siri-like voice assistant available in beta form as part of Windows Phone 8.1.

This is one of the first phones to launch since Microsoft announced its intention to market phones under the broader ‘Microsoft devices’ banner. However, the device continues to use clear on-body Nokia branding.

Much like other Lumia phones, the Lumia 830 comes in an array of shades including some pretty bright ones. The Lumia 830 is available in orange and bright green, as well as the more sober white and black.
