Microsoft kicks off Lumia Denim rollout in China

Microsoft has officially begun rolling out its new Windows Phone update, and China has been chosen as the starting point.

The eastern nation is now on the receiving end of Microsoft’s software push, with Lumia 1320s, 525s, 526s, 625s, and 720s all bagging the update.

Denim was announced back in September, with Nokia – yes, Nokia – revealing the details of the update.

For starters, the Lumia Camera app is getting a few welcome upgrades, including making taking photographs a much nippier process.

Microsoft is also adding a ‘Moment Capture’ feature that lets you shoot 4K video at 24 frames per second.

Other camera upgrades include ‘Rich Capture’, which brings automatic high dynamic range and dynamic flash, with an extra boon to image processing packed inside too.

Also included is an upgrade to ‘Glance Screen’ with weather, health, and fitness information, as well as the ‘Hey Cortana’ feature, which works in much the same way as Android’s ‘OK Google.’

Interestingly, none of the Lumia phones receiving the update can actually make use of the new ‘Hey Cortana’ feature, which could signal why these handsets are getting the upgrade so early.

It’s also worth mentioning that not all phones will receive all of the camera upgrades either, as not all handsets can handle the changes.

We heard that the rollout would begin soon late last month, although Microsoft didn’t provide much in the way of specifics.

Unfortunately it’s still not clear when UK-based Lumia devices will get the update, and Microsoft is remaining frustratingly mum on the matter.
