Microsoft has confirmed that the HoloLens development kit will go on sale in Q1 2016.

Speaking at the special Windows event, Microsoft took the time to announce the first dev kit for its augmented reality headset, Microsoft HoloLens.

Microsoft confirmed that the HoloLens developer kit will go on sale in the first quarter of 2016, with a price tag of a whopping $3000.

The holographic headset was given a fresh showing at the special event with the new Project X-Ray.

This mixed reality experience saw the wearer defending his living room from a robot invasion.

The headset knows where your furniture and walls are, so you'll feel at home while they rip through the walls.

You'll be equipped with a laser gun that mounts as a wearable hologram on your arm.

The HoloLens features see-through holographic HD lenses and spacial sound, so it feels like everything is happening in the real world in real space.

Under the hood, so to speak, is a custom-built holographic chip and silicon that will help create quite the unusual experience.

Plus, Microsoft has been keen to stress that the HoloLens is fully wireless, with no connections or wired required - even to a PC.

We have to admit, that we're truly intrigued as to how the HoloLens work, and might just start saving for that $3000 dev kit...
