In a move that should surprise no one, Microsoft says its new Edge browser is the most power-efficient on Windows 10.
Microsoft has puts the new Edge web browser to the test in a power-drain trial against its biggest rivals. Edge faced off against Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera in video streaming tests on the Surface Book.

The final times were: Firefox (05:09:30), Edge (07:22:07), Chrome (04:19:50), and Opera (06:18:33). That means that the PC running Microsoft Edge lasted:
- 70% longer than the PC running Chrome
- 43% longer than the PC running Firefox
- 17% longer than the PC running Opera
Jason Weber, Director of the Web Platform Team for Microsoft Edge, said:
“We designed Microsoft Edge from the ground up to prioritise power efficiency and deliver more battery life, without any special battery saving mode or changes to the default settings. Our testing and data shows that you can simply browse longer with Microsoft Edge than with Chrome, Firefox, or Opera on Windows 10 devices.”

Microsoft’s trial is undoubtedly impressive, especially considering the huge difference between Edge and Chrome in terms of power consumption. That said, Edge is still missing browser extensions, a popular Chrome and Firefox feature. Fortunately, Microsoft is adding this in the upcoming Anniversary Update for Windows 10, due to arrive in summer.
It’s also worth bearing in mind that these browsers were all running on Windows 10, and on Microsoft’s own Surface Books. That means we can’t assume this test necessarily holds true on non-Microsoft software or devices until tested.
