Microsoft drops emergency security update across all versions of Windows

It’s just over a week until Microsoft begins sending Windows 10 out into the wild, but before that the company is taking care of some pretty serious business with the current versions of its operating system.

Redmond pushed out a “critical” security update on Monday, for all supported versions of Windows, including the Windows 10 previews.

According to a Microsoft statement, the update resolves a vulnerability that could allow remote access and code execution.

The firm says (via The Next Web): “This security update resolves a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted document or visits an untrusted webpage that contains embedded OpenType fonts.”

Embedded OpenType fonts were developed by Microsoft and Adobe and are available freely online.

The company added that the “security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how the Windows Adobe Type Manager Library handles OpenType fonts.”

Microsoft says there’s no evidence of the vulnerability being exploited as yet, but now its existence is out in the open, Windows users should update their software as soon as possible.

Those with automatic updates available on Vista, Windows 7 or the Windows 10 previews will not need to take any action, but others should check their software updates portal as soon as possible.
