Microsoft doubles free OneDrive storage capacity

Microsoft has overhauled its OneDrive pricing plans, more than doubling the amount of storage space users can access for free.

With none-paying OneDrive users having previously been limited to 7GB of storage, Microsoft has confirmed that users can now make us of 15GB of space without charge, with larger storage options now available at heavily reduced prices.

“With OneDrive, we want to give you one place for all of your stuff: your photos, videos, documents and other files,” Microsoft’s Principal Group Program Manager for OneDrive said via an official blog announcement.

“Of course, to do this, we need to make sure you actually have enough storage space for everything, particularly given that the amount of content everyone has is growing by leaps and bounds.

Discussing the increased free access, he added: “Our data tells us that 3 out of 4 people have less than 15 GB of files stored on their PC. Factoring in what they may also have stored on other devices, we believe providing 15 GB for free right out of the gate – with no hoops to jump through – will make it much easier for people to have their documents, videos, and photos available in one place.”

As well increasing the free data limit, Microsoft has confirmed that 1TB of complimentary OneDrive storage will now be available to those who subscribe to Office 365.

A move which is sure to appease Office 365 subscribers, further OneDrive price cuts will see storage costs reduced by 70 per cent as Microsoft looks to gain a foothold on the growing number of cloud storage rivals.

The new, lower costs will see each 100GB of storage set users back just £1.99 per month.

According to Microsoft, the new price structures and storage allowances will come into effect over the next month, with existing subscribers set to benefit from the lower fees automatically.
