Microsoft discontinues Surface 2 as Surface Pro 3 sales soar

Microsoft has announced it has halted manufacturing of the Surface 2 hybrid device running Windows RT.

The second generation tablet-cum-laptop is biting the dust after the company discovered a winning formula with the latest Surface 3 Pro device.

Just yesterday, Microsoft announced it had brought in $1.1 billion in revenue from the Surface division in the last three months, based on the success of the latest generation model.

The firm didn’t announce specific figures but it appears the 15-month old Surface 2 was responsible for very little of this success.

In a statement (via The Verge) the company said: "We are no longer manufacturing Surface 2; however, those still eager to buy Surface should visit Microsoft Retail Stores, MicrosoftStore.com, third-party retailers and resellers for the latest availability."

Microsoft has not announced whether the end for the Surface 2 marks the end for the desperately disappointing, touch-focused Windows RT operating system.

With no sign of a device to succeed and no plans to upgrade existing devices to Windows 10, it appears RT is dead and buried.

Microsoft’s earnings report presented the Surface devision in a shining light, with Lumia sales also topping 10 million in a quarter for the first time.

It wasn’t all good news for the Redmond-based company though. Profits were down year on year and despite its chart topping festive-season the company also sold less Xbox consoles than the previous year.

Maybe next years model won't throttle as badly as this one does. The Surface Pro 2 is still the one to beat.

How do you mean surface 2 is still the one to beat when no. 3 is clearly far superior in every way? Would like to know why you say that, thanks.

First thing.
Pretty sure 'tablet-cum-laptop' is the wrong 'come' you filthy animal haha.

Second to the commenters, running a i7/512 ZERO throttling even when rendering video. The firmware updates have improved it, and the most recent one makes it run completely cool.

not to get pedantic but In defence of a fellow journo "cum" is a preposition, so it is used in the same way as "with" and "also" and is used to describe things that have a dual nature or function.
