Microsoft has officially confirmed that it has acquired the team behind the Sunrise calendar app for iOS, Android, and desktop.
Earlier in the month, a report emerged claiming that Microft had snapped up Sunrise for around $100 million (£65 million).
Now, that purchase has been made official. Over on the official Microsoft blog, a post from corporate vice president for Outlook and Office 365 Rajesh Jha confirms and explains the deal.
“We are making this acquisition because we believe a reinvention in the way people use calendars on mobile devices is long overdue,” says Jha.
He goes on to say that this, combined with the recent acquisition of mobile email app Accompli, demonstrate Microsoft’s ambition “to rethink the productivity category.”
In Sunrise’s case, Microsoft likes the way the app connects your calendar with a range of other third party apps and services, thus providing a better view of the month ahead. It clearly wants to harness the way the app pulls in details “from across your digital life,” as well as its “simple and beautiful design across devices” for a consistent experience.

From the looks of the related Sunrise blog post on the matter, the Sunrise team will remain intact and will even expand. It will simply operate under the Microsoft banner from now on.
This Sunrise app itself will remain available to download for free on Android, iOS, and desktop after the acquisition.
