Microsoft calms fears Xbox One Kinect will be used for harvesting ad data

Microsoft has calmed fears that the Xbox One Kinect will be used for harvesting ad data, after an executive’s words were taken out of context.

The original story of Kinect’s advertising snooping appeared over the weekend, suggesting that Microsoft could be harvesting marketing data for advertisers.

Advertising Age quoted Yusuf Medhi, Microsoft’s VP of marketing and strategy, speaking at a marketing conference in Phoenix, but apparently the publication misinterpreted his words.

“It’s early days, but we’re starting to put that together in more of a unifying way, and hopefully at some point we can start to offer that to advertisers broadly,” Medhi was quoted saying originally, explaining how the Xbox One will bridge offline and online worlds.

Microsoft has complained the reporter didn’t interview Medhi to explain his speech and therefore misinterpreted the context.

The company has now said Medhi’s quote was explaining how content can be carried over from the Xbox One to platforms like Xbox SmartGlass.

“For example, just as Xbox SmartGlass allows companion mobile experiences that are synchronous to what is being watched on TV, advertisers could create new experiences unifying their content across devices”, explained Microsoft in a statement. “The quote from Yusuf in Ad Age is not in relation to Kinect.”

To support this, Xbox’s Major Nelson aka Larry Hryb took to Twittter alerting users that a correction had been issued for the comment:

“FYI: We are seeking a correction to the Ad Age story that quotes Yusuf,” he tweeted.

The company has said it is “actively seeking a correction” for any stories that incorrectly quote Medhi.

“We have a long-standing commitment to your privacy and will not target ads to you based on any data Kinect collects unless you choose to allow us to do so,” added Microsoft’s statement.
