Microsoft is adding in-document chat to some of its Office Online apps.
A report from Paul Thurrott’s Windows Supersite reveals the firm will integrate chat for collaborators on Word and PowerPoint Online documents.
The Skype-based chats will enable any users currently working on the same document to exchange messages without leaving the document. Conversation can be continued using the main Skype app, according to Thurrott.
The functionality will not be available on Excel and OneNote, the report states.
Adding chat to Office Online documents makes sense for Microsoft as Skype chats are already part of the Outlook.com and OneDrive platforms.
It’ll also give the company the chance to match Google’s Drive, which has long-offered in-app chat.
The new chat pane will be available to Office Online customers within the next few weeks.
