Microsoft accidentally announces Acompli email app purchase

Microsoft has revealed that it has purchased the powerful email app Acompli – but it evidently didn’t mean to spill the beans.

Over on the official Microsoft blog, a post recently appeared from corporate vice president Rajesh Jha with no apparent content. The title of the post read “blank post please delete.”

However, the URL for the blog post read “microsoft-acquires-acompli.”

The post has since been deleted, but not before TechCrunch took a screenshot for proof.

So what is Acompli? It’s a young iOS and Android email application aimed at business and power users.

It’s been impressing many in the tech press with its advanced features, such as an integrated calendar, native Outlook support, advanced filtering systems, and Mailbox-like email deferment.

Indeed, it’s the strong Outlook support (still fairly rare in modern email apps) that probably prompted Microsoft to make the purchase. For Acompli’s part, the report points out that it last secured a round of funding in June of last year.

Typically, such funding lasts 18 months, so the startup may have been looking for additional investment when it stumbled upon a (presumably) meaty Microsoft acquisition offer.

Neither of the parties involved has commented on this news, of course, but that accidental blog post is pretty much the next best thing to official confirmation.
