Metal Gear Solid 5’s PVP mode is locked behind a paywall

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain’s competitive multiplayer mode, Forward Operation Base, will be restricted behind a microtransaction paywall.

The long awaited, MGS 5 is set to launch on September 2, but it has recently been discovered that its ambitious PVP mode will be locked behind an obnoxious paywall.

The mode itself, Forward Operation Base, allows players to use resources gained throughout the game to construct and expand their own offshore military base.

Players will have the opportunity to attack each other’s bases, providing the incentive to build up their weaponry and defenses as they progress through the single-player portion of the game.

Unfortunately, to gain access to this mode you will need to purchase MB Coins, which can only be obtained by spending real-world currency. These coins are then used to purchased space to begin constructing your base, making it impossible to continue otherwise.

We were unable to confirm the cost of MB Coins when playing the review build of the game, as no online functionality was available at the time.

Konami’s public relations team had this to say on the matter when approached by Gamespot:

"...unfortunately we don’t have any official details to share at the moment regarding the microtransaction model for F.O.B.. I should have more information for you next week though as those details are still be solidified."

We hope microtransactions aren’t a frequent annoyance throughout Metal Gear Solid V, as they feel particularly out of place in such a narrative driven title.

There are other microtransactions present throughout the game, but Konami have stressed that they are merely an optional alternative.

The Phantom Pain is rumoured to be the last game in the franchise to be developed by Kojima Productions and helmed by Hideo Kojima himself

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is is coming to PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC on September 2.
