The compact camera market has taken a battering from improving smartphone snappers in recent years. While that hasn’t been entirely bad news for Sony, the company appears to come up with a reason for people to take interest in the sector once again.
The firm has announced the RX1R II, which packs a 42.4-megapixel full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor into a body the size of the popular Sony RX100 compact range
The sensor is also backlit, meaning it has an ISO range that’s expandable to 50-102,400 (from 100-25,600).
Sony is also promising image processing that’s 3.5-times faster than the predecessor, while there’s a pop-up 2.4m dot OLED electronic viewfinder on-board. Video is 1080p, rather than 4K, but that’s one of the few concessions made by Sony here.
The presence of a fixed f2.0, 35mm lens means you may not be able to fit the RX1R II, might not fit in your jeans packet, but it’ll certainly pack a lighter load than a DSLR.

Sony has announced November availability for the United States, while it is yet to confirm a roll out in international territories.
As you’d expect, a compact body doesn’t mean a compact price. Sony will want $3,300 for the RX1R II, which is about £2,130 in proper money.
