MediaTek has just announced a new smartphone chip as part of its continuing effort to face off against Qualcomm.
The new MediaTek MT6752 appears to be poised as an alternative to the Snapdragon series, and will start shipping in smartphones by the end of Q2 this year.
It’s a 64-bit chip running eight processor cores. All eight are based on ARM’s Cortex-A53 architecture, and come clocked at 1.5GHz.
It also supports Open GL ES 30 and Open CL 1.2 APIs of the Mali-T720 GPU, which should provide strong gaming performance.
The chip boasts full support for full HD video rendering – 1920 x 1080p at 60 frames per second.
MediaTek says the chip will also support H.264 1080p video playback at 30 frames per second, as well as H.265 1080p video playback at 30 frames per second with low power consumption.
Camera support is offered for sensors measuring up to 16-megapixels too, which should make it a solid choice for many smartphone manufacturers.

What’s most exciting though is that the processor supports TD-LTE, FDD-LTE Cat. 4 networks – that’s good for a theoretical 150Mbps download speed.
It also supports DC HSPA+, TD-SCDMA, and Edge networks, as well as radio frequencies.
There’s also the expected dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 support.
All of this makes it a good pick for smartphones across the global market due to its wide berth of connectivity options.
