Maxtor's DiamondMax 10 series includes drives of up to 300GB in size sporting a massive 16MB of cache.
Maxtor, the hard disk manufacturer has launched a new series of hard disks offering up to 300GB of capacity and 16MB of cache.
The DiamondMax 10 series of drives uses the SATA interface and spins its platters at 7,200rpm. The 80, 20, 160 and 200GB versions have 8Mb of cache, while the 250 and 300GB feature the full 16MB.
The drives also features support for native command queuing (NCQ), which reorders read/write instructions so that they’re more efficiently handled. In combination with the large cache this should have a very positive impact on performance. However NCQ, does require chipset support, which at the moment is limited to Intel’s 915G/P and 25X chipsets.
According to Sunil Kumar, Intel’s director of chipset and software marketing, “When the Intel 915G/P or the 925X Express chipsets with Intel Matrix Storage Technology are combined with NCQ-enabled drives like Maxtor’s DiamondMax 10, users experience faster boot times, file transfers and game level loads.”
Maxtor has not given details of pricing but the drives should be available now with parallel ATA/133 versions scheduled to begin shipping at the end of the third quater of 2004.
