BioWare has confirmed that they will be producing Mass Effect 4 from their Montreal Studios, set in an all new universe somehow related to the original series.

The game developer spoke about the upcoming Mass Effect 4 game at a panel at PAX East in Boston to celebrate the culmination of the original Mass Effect series.

ROUND-UP: Mass Effect 4 news, rumours and release date

Casey Hudson, the series’ executive producer, said the game will be developed mostly from the BioWare Montreal studios, but he would remain the executive producer for the new game from the Edmonton BioWare headquarters.

Although Mass Effect 3 was the end of the Commander Shepherd story, the next game in the series would explore the potentials the Mass Effect universe has to offer. BioWare has already said the game will not be called Mass Effect 4, but until we have any further details, that is the way the game is being identified.

“We are starting to get ready to develop another Mass Effect game, and it’s going to be a new thing,” said Hudson. “We want to be able to give fans an opportunity to get back into the world with these things you’ve come to know and love about the Mass Effect experience but start something fresh and new – a new way for you to explore the whole universe in Mass Effect.”

The fourth instalment in the series has yet to be officially announced, but Hudson did confirm the game will use the Frostbite engine. Mass Effect 4 will most likely be a title launched on the next-generation PS4 and Xbox 720 consoles.

New BioWare IP

However, as well as offering a few teaser details on a Mass Effect 4 game, Hudson also revealed that he and other Mass Effect original trilogy creators will be working on a new non-Mass Effect title.

“We are developing a whole new fictional universe at BioWare for myself and Preston [and other main Mass Effect trilogy creators]. That’s kind of our next thing. We’re focusing on building something new the way we did at the very beginning on Mass Effect,” added Hudson.

It is currently unknown what the team are working on, but if its half as successful as the Mass Effect trilogy they could be onto a winner.

Hudson was also excited about the Mass Effect movie currently in development at Legendary Pictures.

“That hopefully should be seen as a good thing, because what we’re looking at are, I think, the right things to make sure it’s going to be a great movie,” he explained. “It’s not just going to be a movie; it’s going to be really special.”

I think its great that Bioware well continue what they do best. Mass effect was by far the best game I ever played. I would love to meet Casey Hudson and tell him I've got a whole lot of ideas for Mass effect 4. It would be a dream come try to be part of the team all Hudson would have to do is say yes and I'll will roll up the sleeve get to work. Yes indeed.

My only request to them is to have greater use and options of the dialogue wheel, it felt a little haphazard in ME3

Mass Effect 4 has alot of potential to be a huge success, that being said it also has potential to really suck, but i think of the team could possibly add some of the Multiplayer effects of 3 into 4's single player, it would be really cool. Just imagine, instead of trying to play with a NOT commander Shepard you could possibly play as a krogan warlord, or an Asari Justicar, or even better, how about some of the N7 classes?????? :)

I'm just afraid this will go badly. The ME series is wonderful.. with a bit of a bad ending to the Shepard trilogy. I just hope ME4 lives up to it's predecessors.

Would be nice if they explored the Prothean history based on the details provided by Javik, many different world, cultures and races, terrorized by the Reapers...

No matter what game they're working on next, I hope they don't forget that what made the Mass effect trilogy so great was not only the world but the characters in it. I think that's where some of the disappointment comes from with the end to Mass Effect 3: they ended the 'universe united against the Reapers' story, but they didn't give any closure to Shepherd's story (seeing his chest rise isn't closure). While the universe can hold our interest for a first and maybe second playthrough, it's the balance between world and characters that we become really attached to.

Mass effect now that's a real role playing game. There are few equals. If you played through the whole series and all the DLC it really plays well. Everything you do in any series or DLC impacts your character in some way. Dialogue was very extensive too.

It's going to be tough to top the fate of the galaxy threatened by nearly invincible enemy theme. I'm sure they'll try though.

Hold on Javic states that humans were in caves, but the other Reaper purge was 50,000 years prior. Anything based on Javic would be like a DLC though. I don't think they want to reuse any characters.

i think one big thing these role-playing games are missing is variety in the endings. it doesnt make sense to give people free-will in games, allowing all different sorts of interactions and decisions, then bottle-necking everyone into the same ending. i'd like to start seeing some of these games make multiple different endings that reflect how you played the game. it would make it a lot more interesting, and give these games more replay value.
as for "ME4", i hope it can manage to weave in the old characters/ story in a meaningful way. i'd also like to see less cut-scenes when it comes to flying, and make it more interactive. landing/ taking-off or exploring the universe in a sort of free-roam would make it more authentic.

i think its gonna be before shepards story because if you think about the amount of paths you can take in the mass effect series it will keep piling up if you look at the ending there the 3 were hey survive but there is the one were they all die put and the next cycle comes so with that they will have to make a whole new universe filled with new characters then theres the other 3 anyway destroy all synthetics will they ever figure out how to make new mass effect relays it just seems that if they do after shepard it is going to be too much work and if they miss one of them out there is gonna be a lot of rage and anger from fans.

but if anything i would like it to be in the krogan rebellion were you fight as a turian.
i also want the movie to be that because if they do a 1hr 30mins of commander shepard from one of the games it just wont work you spend hours developing shepard on the game to see that in a movie might destroy the character for people

IMO I don't want any new Mass Effect game that doesn't have Shepard. I've played all 3 games as a female paragon and it just wouldn't feel right without Shepard.

MASS EFFECT 3 : In my conclusion the whole game was ungodly unpredicting, and couldnt have been any better, my problem was that all the endings ver not only vertulaly the same but pretty much exactly the same... :( but i know bioware was not to blame for this as, i read a few threads that stated EA's push to release the game on schedule instead of being given the needed time they asked for to profect that ending.
anyway if i were to rate this mindblowing, constantly unpredicting finale of this awinspiring series in all the categories of ; graphics, story, plot, characters, and all other catagories that just went blank in my mind. in my opinion id give it a 9/10.

this rating is laregly due the games constant mind blowing information, especially if you unlock the prothean DLC, and bring him alone ever mission, the side statements, and direct information he provides u with is unbelievable, and could never be concieved without him. but even with out him, the catalyist, cycle of life, and meeting up with old friends, just made this game feel so emotional and as if u were actually this CMDR. unbelievable Bioware, i bow to your inspriation and creation! touche bioware, lets see if u can AWH me again.

Love to see ME4 on the horizon. How about you incorporate something you have not done before Bio-ware. I romanced and entered a relationship with Ashley williams the first one and the third one. Sexual encounters result in children. Reproduction of the Commander in what will become his son or daughter. Ashley Williams Pregnant, however start it off with a Flashback of say the normandys crew, on that planet. Met up with other life, yada yada happened. Ashley was pregnant with the commanders child and boom. Story lines. Or if another species had sexual interracted with the commander, then there you go again. Multiple choice right off that bat, Who did you Romance with in the previous version before the death of the commander. Aria, Ashley, or whomever. quick speed up of the childs life growing up narrated and brought us up to date. Unless you were Gay then you have no children and you have that option to be the new guy of whom you carry on the ME4 series. Great Ideas trust me. I have many. regardless of the name of the "Finale" of the series You should make it also PC compatible. This new approach to the game could be even better with my idea in it as well, if you romanced you have the option to choose who it was, to see the child and to explore the world as commander sheperds kid OR if you were gay or did NOT romance then you can continue as the new guy exploring this world of Mass Effect. Depending on the choices that were made, Include loading your character from ME3. I loaded the same charcter from ME1 in ME2 and the same character from ME2 in ME3. Heroism, courage, dishonorable decisive actions, Honorable Decisive actions, Devious, Mind bending, a Perfect Curve ball entering this new game of the series. Take your' pick mind your choices, Reflect on the past ponder the old ways, Introduce New attitudes, So many things you guys could do.

That's a sick idea, I hope that they thought of that aswell..

I'm hoping that they sort of keep Shepherd in the picture. I like the idea of Maybe the character being Shepherd's child. I explored many of the romance options, It would be cool to see a female Shepherd and Kaiden child. as well as maybe a mix with an alien race, Such as if Shepherd romanced Tali or Liara (After all they did talk about their little blue children)
Im hoping they stay true to the character relation at least, as this is what kept me replaying the series over and over.. its a wonderful game but its the characters and the interaction with them that makes you fall in love and keep coming back to play.

There Better be a damn Shepard-Tali'zorah romance in the movie.

June 5, 2013, 11:42 am

That's an awesome idea. It also introduces other story lines if you romanced one of the aliens, such as liara, Tali or Garrus. Human Quarian hybrid? I'd like to see that!

miss shepard but cant wait to see new character

August 17, 2013, 2:44 pm

I romanced Garrus in ME2 and ME3. I also survived from the final mission so even if I must play Mass effect 4 with a total new character, it would be lovely to see how my Shephard and Garrus meet each others again somehow. And how they would live together and happily ever after. It could give me an opportunity to leave the original story and end ME trilogy properly. THEN I would love to play ME 4. I just hate the fact that my lovely Garrus is lonely and alone somewhere in the universe.

At the end of Mass Effect 3 if you got the extended ending you would have seen that after everything happened and no matter what you picked as your final choice at the end of the game was that the place that commander Shepard was originally at to pick the three choices was that the place had exploded and Shepard was under all the debree was commander Shepard and they showed that commander took a breath and ended up living in the end no matter what. so technically he has to be in the fourth one somewhere while your playing as a different character.
