Mass Effect 4 will be a fresh and new universe experience, says BioWare
BioWare has confirmed that they will be producing Mass Effect 4 from their Montreal Studios, set in an all new universe somehow related to the original series.
The game developer spoke about the upcoming Mass Effect 4 game at a panel at PAX East in Boston to celebrate the culmination of the original Mass Effect series.
ROUND-UP: Mass Effect 4 news, rumours and release date
Casey Hudson, the series’ executive producer, said the game will be developed mostly from the BioWare Montreal studios, but he would remain the executive producer for the new game from the Edmonton BioWare headquarters.
Although Mass Effect 3 was the end of the Commander Shepherd story, the next game in the series would explore the potentials the Mass Effect universe has to offer. BioWare has already said the game will not be called Mass Effect 4, but until we have any further details, that is the way the game is being identified.
“We are starting to get ready to develop another Mass Effect game, and it’s going to be a new thing,” said Hudson. “We want to be able to give fans an opportunity to get back into the world with these things you’ve come to know and love about the Mass Effect experience but start something fresh and new – a new way for you to explore the whole universe in Mass Effect.”
The fourth instalment in the series has yet to be officially announced, but Hudson did confirm the game will use the Frostbite engine. Mass Effect 4 will most likely be a title launched on the next-generation PS4 and Xbox 720 consoles.
New BioWare IP
However, as well as offering a few teaser details on a Mass Effect 4 game, Hudson also revealed that he and other Mass Effect original trilogy creators will be working on a new non-Mass Effect title.
“We are developing a whole new fictional universe at BioWare for myself and Preston [and other main Mass Effect trilogy creators]. That’s kind of our next thing. We’re focusing on building something new the way we did at the very beginning on Mass Effect,” added Hudson.
It is currently unknown what the team are working on, but if its half as successful as the Mass Effect trilogy they could be onto a winner.
Hudson was also excited about the Mass Effect movie currently in development at Legendary Pictures.
“That hopefully should be seen as a good thing, because what we’re looking at are, I think, the right things to make sure it’s going to be a great movie,” he explained. “It’s not just going to be a movie; it’s going to be really special.”
