Mass Effect 3: Garrus Vakarian
Garrus Vakarian to star in Mass Effect 4?

Mass Effect 4 could feature one of the existing developed characters as its protagonist, potentially a Krogan like Grunt, Garrus Vakarian or even the Illusive Man.

BioWare developers have been openly discussing the direction in which to take Mass Effect 4, including the possibilities of playing as one of the existing characters.

“There’s so much that could be told in the Mass Effect universe,” said Casey Hudson, Executive Producer for the Mass Effect series, to the Official Xbox Magazine. “It’d be cool to do something completely unrelated to the larger storyline, like a story about a private investigator on the Citadel. Or maybe something detailing Garrus’ time in C-Sec.”

“While being one of Shepard’s most loyal friends, Garrus has also had some of the most driven personal goals. He’s a hero in his own right, as Archangel and beyond. Who wouldn’t want to see the further adventures of the bold, charming Garrus Vakarian (there’s a lot of guns out there to calibrate),” added Hudson.

However, Preston Watamaniuk, Lead Designer for the Mass Effect series, said he thinks “a game centred on brutal Krogan combat with more of a melee focus could be pretty exciting.”

Mass Effect 4 gamers could even play as the genetically engineered Krogan super soldier, Grunt, but he can die in the Collector attacks in Mass Effect 3. The developers don’t mention how they will deal with the continuity issues of the various outcomes of players’ choices in ME3, but playing as Grunt or another of the Krogan like Urdnot Wrex, has the potential for some exciting gameplay.

Although, Krogan aside, Mac Walters, Lead Writer for the Mass Effect series believes that one of the other characters already featured in the Mass Effect series could make for a more interesting storyline.

“Aria. The Illusive Man. Kai Leng. Any henchman. The list goes on. I think most of them could have successful spin-offs of their own in some fashion,” said Walters.

Mike Gamble on the other hand suggested that the star of the Mass Effect 3 From Ashes DLC and the galaxy’s sole surviving Prothean, Javik, should steal the Mass Effect 4 show.

“Following the story of Javik a little bit more would be pretty cool,” said Gamble. “As the last remaining member of a lost race, I think that we could tell a lot of stories about his adventures in the Milky Way, and coming to terms with his place in the new Galaxy.”

cant you just use shepard again but make mass effect 3 a dream and then carry on with the same storyline but the reapers are still sorted out, but shepards still alive

I'd love to see a buddy-cop style adventure with Garrus and Wrex teaming up and kicking ass across the galaxy. Garrus as the renegade loose cannon who does whatever it takes, and Wrex complaining that he's "too old for this sh*t".

i agree nick, could so have the events of mass effect 2 and 3 as a dream. at the start of mass effect 2 Shepard ruptures his/her suit while saving joker, instead of him/her falling to their death they have knocked themselves unconscious, fallen into a coma and rescued by a ship then taken back to the citadel hosptal, waking up to deal with a new threat some time later. You could have Kaiden/Ashley sat in a hospital bed talking to Shepard and telling them what's happening to get round the whole coma/dream part.

You still need a neagtive character/faction to fight against, that's the biggest problem with the future ME games. Once the reapers were defeated that seems impossible.

Won't they need to have 3 totally different galaxies, depending on which ending you chose in me3?

That would be amazing! Lots of comic potential there

Why not follow where vaga came from or what happens to liara when she is not with sheaperd as the new shadow broker?

Stupid, bioware needs to get there stuff together. Don't beat a dead horse, either continue Shepard's story of start with brand new characters. I love garrus and wrex but they were icing on the shepard cake. The next story should be after the reapers with a new HUMAN hero.

I think following Javik could be interesting. With his sensory ability there could a lot of opportunities and situations where it might come in handy. He is, after all, the last of his kind. It would be fun to see if anyone could melt his heart and bring him to terms with his feelings and new home. Maybe a trip to Kahje and mingle with the Hanar's. It was mentioned in the Mass Effect 3 game, so why not? But I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I won't buy another game from these guys. They kill off the hero in Mass Effect. This was the first game of this kind I had played and it was Awesome! till the end of 3. People don't play video games for reality, what's wrong with you.

I agree, it's not mass effect with out shep.

That's one huge problem with gamers these days. It's Mass Effect with or without Shepard. Sure, I'd like to see another Shepard-Effect game where the ending was elaborated on, and such, but if they refuse to do that, I'd rather see a new Mass Effect game with an entirely new hero and crew. Like, the next Shepard, but not Shepard. Know what I mean? I don't want a Garrus spin-off, and I don't want a Javik spin-off, either. I want another customizable hero-in-the-making game.

No, thanks. That game would make absolutely no sense, considering that it's possible for Garrus and Wrex to die. Think things through.

Well, obviously. My comment wasn't meant to be taken seriously. It was a tongue-in-cheek pastiche on Lethal Weapon, like ME's own Blasto. Still, a tiny part of you must want to play that game, or you have no soul! :)

Also, why would anyone let Wrex and Garrus die? If there's a way to truly lose at Mass Effect, then that is surely it!

Make two games of effort and sacrifice completely irrelevant? No thanks.

I let Wrex die in Mass Effect 1 sometimes. It frees up the possibility of sabotaging the genophage cure and saving Mordin's life.

That which makes a hero is that he/she dies. Otherwise its just the same old tired washed up crap that comics and movies keep feeding us, I loved that Shepard died it was a emotional thing. I would rather personally see a brand new cast of characters with an unrelated story maybe set ten to twenty years after ME3.

Why wouldn't they? Think about it. How many other games have had different worlds depending on circumstances? How would it be much different from having your ME1 choices affect the galaxy in ME2? What about ME2 into ME3? They could do it, and there's no valid excuse they could give that would excuse laziness on their part. Hell, I actually don't mind the endings as they are now, but I'm more of a "big picture" kind of guy. I like them ok, but they still could be better. I would like to see a game that elaborates on the choice that was made. I think that if you chose Destroy and Shepard survives (which BioWare has confirmed) and you see him or her breathe, I believe the new game should reference or show Shepard as having served as an Alliance Admiral or on the Council. I mean, if they won't make another Shepard-Effect game, they could at least do that.

I feel like the game should start with Shepard in the beginning of the Skyllian Blitz till the end as a dream only to awake on the ground beside the beam to the Citadel, if you know about the indoctrination theory. After the true ending unfolds with Shepard surviving, he has a more personal mission to do. Bioware can decide what mission that should be but that is just what I feel should happen.

Doing a sequel for such a game would be like making a sequel to a classic movie, it always ruins it. Mass effect was such a massive story that any part of it's history could be a game of it's own. How important is something like first contact to humanity? would be great to have that experience in a game such as mass effect and a war with the turians would be very interesting and they can make a pretty deep story out of those by themselves, or even something like the cycles before and the beginning of building the crucible would be interesting, but personally i think first contact is a winner here. A sequel would be devastating, however they make it it's still gonna leave a lot of people unpleased because it can go anywhere and the original story was so good that I don't think recycling it and making something new out of it for the sake of a sequel would do anything good to it. Imagine someone doing a sequel for the movie "Fight Club"...

Well, there is an ending where you "survive" (you see your body lying in the ruins and you suddenly take a breath), just choose to kill the Reapers with an *effective* (not total) military strength over 5K. That said, the Shepard fandom is equivalent to the Revan (KOTOR) fandom, the fans hate to see someone they've come to know and become die off or become something they didn't expect/want. Personally I wanted my Shepard to survive, but the ending I consider canon for *my* Shep was him sacrificing himself, it sucks but it's what he would do.

All that aside, I would like Mass Effect 4 to either explore the First Contact or Rachni Wars as a prequel, maybe use Anderson as a protagonist. If they do a sequel, it would be interesting to have the time set several years after 3 with a couple of the relays repaired, piracy rampant from destroyed economies and racial tensions rising as old arguments continue to rise. Anyway, I look forward to what they could do though as much as I loved everyone in the Mass Effect universe, I want them as cameos so that we can see their stories wrapping up Post-Shep, alive or dead. A new set of characters would probably help the franchise break free of alot of the canon-quandaries.

sorry, but after you (bioware) have made us go through all this to give us that ending,(even with the band-aid ending) anything else will just seem like long DLC. just find someway to bring back the human-reaper and let us have a REAL boss fight. and before you say anything about how lame that is, just give that statement a VERY hard second thought
