Mass Effect 4 looks “beautiful, fun and ambitious”, says Bioware

Bioware has announced that it is very pleased with the progress of the new Mass Effect game, currently known as Mass Effect 4.

The Bioware team have been bragging about how well the new Mass Effect game is coming along on Twitter in the past couple of days, causing mass hysteria among fans.

Casey Hudson, Executive Producer of the Mass Effect series has been tweeting back and fourth with Michael Gamble, Producer on the Mass Effect franchise, giving us a little insight on the game’s development progress.

“What’s even more fun than working on the design of a new fictional world? Taking our first steps into it and looking around,” tweeted Hudson.

Hudson had already announced Mass Effect 4 would take place in a fresh and new universe during the PAX East panel, so fans are very intrigued as to where and when the upcoming instalment will take place.

However, it was Hudson’s next tweet that caused fans’ excitement to brim over.

“In a milestone review for next Mass Effect game. Team is doing outstanding work. Looks beautiful, fun, ambitious, and Mass Effect-y!” he added later.

It seems that Mass Effect 4 is well into its development period. It’s only been six months since Hudson confirmed the game was in production, but it seems the Bioware team have been beavering away behind the scenes.

“I like it when a plan comes together. Especially a Mass Effect plan,” added Gamble, after tweeting a virtual high five to his colleague for the aforementioned tweet.

So far, we know very little about the new Mass Effect game, except for the fact you won’t be playing as Commander Shepard, although he/she may well make an appearance.

Instead, you might be playing as one of the characters already featured in the original trilogy such as Garrus, Aria or even the Illusive Man.

I think I speak for the Internet when I say "Let us play as Garrus, and give us co-op play with Wrex".

Other things I'd like to do in a Mass Effect game:
- Play as a young Anderson in the First Contact War and then teaming up with Saren for Spectre training.
- Play as a Krogan during the Rachni wars and Krogan rebellion.
- Play as Legion during the Morning War and Geth sectarian war (opportunity to experience hundreds years of history from Legion's perspective)
- Play as a little Shepard / Liara baby in the post Shepard galaxy, living with the consequences of Mass Effect 3
- Something thousands of years after Mass Effect 3, where Shepard and the Reapers are mere legend, and it's time to create a new legend
- Something completely different that I can't even imagine

How about something with Leviathan? Now that the Reapers are neutralised, what's stopping them from Galactic Conquest again?

Honestly, I hope we're not playing AS a previously featured Character, though I'd enjoy the nostalgia of having them return in one way or another.

I like the character customization, the self-created back-stories, and the personality I get to develop and execute myself...If we're playing as pre-created character, who already have a personality, the conversation choices won't feel right.

My problem with playing as an established character before the reaper war is that we know the (eventual) ending, so the whole game would feel sort of pointless to me. I think thousands of years afterward is really Bioware's only option for something fresh using the current mass effect universe.

Well, there are only a few of them, they have no ships we know of, they don't stand a chance against every other race in the galaxy united. Seriously, you could just drop a nuke on them and problem solved.

It would be weird to play a ME game without hearing Jennifer Hale or Mark Meer.

GARRUS. ga RRus. (garrus)

i actually don't like the idea of playing as an uncustomisable or set character, that would kinda make mass effect a little less deep for me. sorry.

September 11, 2013, 7:43 pm

a shepard/liara baby? but what if you never chose liara in any of the games? which is why this will never and should never happen. It would piss off a lot of players

September 11, 2013, 8:28 pm

Let's just trust in Bioware and let them do what Bioware does.

September 11, 2013, 8:34 pm

I don't know if I'd want to play as these characters though. I know Garrus. I know Aria. They are people who have established thoughts, personalities. They're friends, allies, enemies. I don't want to be them, I don't want to be deciding what comes out of their mouths.
Assuming it's a decision-making-conversation-options kind of game of course.
First Contact War game would be sweet.

September 11, 2013, 9:28 pm

Substitute Liara for who ever you had chosen then. Since we didn't follow Shepard's story from his birth it would be possible for him to have kids.

September 11, 2013, 10:12 pm

Well, yes, you're right, of course. And in fact most of my suggestions wouldn't really make for good games. Prequel stories would see events predetermined by existing canon, which defeats the object of choice in the game. But the fanboy in me would still like to see them, even if it doesn't make sense.

September 11, 2013, 10:44 pm

If it takes place in a "fresh new universe" why would you speculate that we'll play as a character from the old universe?

September 11, 2013, 11:09 pm

Hey, I'm damned excited too, but what's with Bioware saying "hey our new game is gonna be great"

September 11, 2013, 11:51 pm

^^ This. After all, leviathans consider themselves the superior, apex race. And even with low numbers, they could still dominate another species, like the rachni again. Or what if the yhag develop space flight...

September 12, 2013, 12:49 am

I'll get it once it drops to $15 but after they destroyed the series and than pooped on the fans I don't trust the mass effect team. The age team has me fired up though. They admitted to thier mistakes and generally seem to want to reach out to thier fans and improve.

September 12, 2013, 6:03 am

Well in that case, the main Shepard son/daughter should be choosable among different races, and with hybrid powers depending on the race or it should be automatically chosen using latest game saves.

Please don't fuck it up Bioware.. I hope it's a new trilogy rather than a prequel

Uh...what's this "another universe thing?"

How is it a mass effect game if it's in an alternate universe?

So it's basically going to be a game set in an entirely new setting. Hell, it could even be a dungeons and dragons style world.

I cannot wait! I hope it isn't a prequel and something completely new. Massive fan of the franchise so cannot wait until I can see the future of the series.

How was the series destroyed? Mass Effect 3 was an excellent game especially with the extended cut. Just because Shepard may of not survived but it is all up to our imagination what has happened to him.
