EA has released a 3D action game based in the Mass Effect world, to support the highly-anticipated Mass Effect 3 for Xbox 360 and PS3. Mass Effect Infiltrator costs £4.99, and is a Universal app - tailored for both iPad and iPhone alike.
Mass Effect Infiltrator doesn't try too hard to steal the Mass Effect 3 spotlight. Instead, its story doesn't intersect very strongly with the main game's plot. Instead of playing as Commander Shephard, the star of all three Mass Effect console games, you are Randall Ezno, a Cerberus agent.
You start off as quite the baddie, grabbing aliens for Cerberus to experiment on. However, you soon realise that you're working for the wrong side and vow to bring the whole show down. Based on the game engine used in the impressive 3D action title Dead Space, Mass Effect Infiltrator is a behind-the-shoulder action game with visual style and fidelity not too many light years away from the Mass Effect console titles.
Crush enemies with intense weapons? Sounds exciting
You move Randall with your left thumb, using your other fingers to change the view and make him roll out of the way of enemy fire. It's a mechanic that worked well in Dead Space, and should do the trick again here.
Mass Effect 3 for Xbox 360 and PS3 is scheduled for release on 9 March in the UK, but a number of online retailers are already showing the game as "in stock". The Mass Effect series has topped seven million sales to date, and early reviews from the US indicate that developer Bioware has not dropped the ball with this third instalment.
