Nintendo has confirmed that Pikmin 3 and a Super Mario Bros. game for the upcoming Wii U console will be shown-off at E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo held in June.
In an unusually open move for Nintendo, two big, highly anticipated Wii U games have already been confirmed. The news originally broke following an interview with Ninty game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Talking to Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Miyamoto revealed that the Mario and Pikmin games series will have new instalments unveiled at E3.
Whether a response to an unintended leak or something that was always part of the plan, Nintendo of America followed-up with an official announcement – “Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year’s E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year’s E3 Expo. We’ll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date.”
Cue great big smiles all around.

The “Mario experience” mentioned in Nintendo’s statement is the tweaked version of New Super Mario Bros. that let you play on the Wii U controller or TV screen, and features greater social interaction than the 2009 retail version of the game. New Super Mario Bros. Wii was the last dedicated, traditional Mario platformer released, making its debut in 2009, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 hit the shelves in 2012. The other big release pencilled-in for a showing at E3, Pikmin 3, was last seen in 2004, when Pikmin 2 was doled-out for Nintendo Gamecube.

Nintendo’s Wii U console is a game console that takes a few cues from tablets, using a controller with a built-in screen, allowing a different style of play to the Nintendo Wii. The console is expected to be released late this year.
