A man in China sold his newborn baby in order to buy a new iPhone, a report claims.
What’s more, the man’s wife says she had no idea the sale was illegal – seriously?
According to the Xiamen Daily News (via Epoch Times), the 19-year-old traded his 18-day-old daughter to a stranger last year in exchange for 23,000 yuan – that’s just shy of £2,500.
The man – named only as A Duan – then used the funds to purchase an iPhone and a motorbike.

Incident took place in Tong’an city, Fujian province
However, Duan eventually turned himself into the police, and is now due to serve a three-year prison sentence.
The biological mother, whose psuedonym is Xiao Mei, has also been prosecuted after being tracked down by police as a fugitive, and is set to spend two-and-a-half years behind bars.
After the arrest, Mei was reported as saying: “I myself was adopted, and many people in my hometown send their kids to other people to raise them. I really didn’t know that it was illegal.”

The buyer has also handed himself over to police, and the baby is now in the custody of the buyer’s sister.
According to the report, the buyer was found by Duan using QQ, a China-based social media platform.
