Major Google Fit update adds real-time stats, third-party data

Google has issued an update for its fitness suite app, which brings in a host of important – and some might say rudimentary – functionality into play.

The new version of Google Fit will now show users their workout data in-real time, with distance, steps, page and calorie details.

The app will also show live progress on a Map for running and cycling workouts.

Google’s updated app will also includes integration with Android Wear watches for the purposes of strength training.

The Android Wear watch will count push ups and sit-ups, squats and the like and add them to your daily activity, ensuring you get credit for them.

Google Fit’s final update also includes integration with third-party nutrition and Sleep apps.

“Google Fit will now show you info from your favorite nutrition and sleep apps. Monitor your diet with MyFitnessPal, Fatsecret, Lifesum, or LoseIt,” Google Fit software engineer Michael Gaiman wrote on the Android blog.

“Or track your sleep with Sleep as Android, Xiaomi Mi Band and Mi Band 1S, Sony Smartband 2, or the Basis Peak. These new integrations (rolling out in the coming days) will provide even better insights into your health and fitness. And with Google Fit, you’ll always have a personal coach cheering you on, right from your phone.”

The update now brings Google Fit up to speed with some of the other wellness suites out there.

It does make you wonder though… what exactly was the point of it before today?
