New OS X backdoor shows malware makers are changing targets

Researchers from security company Kaspersky Labs found malware targeted at Macs that previously only affected Windows and Linux devices.

Once installed, the malware variant – identified as Backdoor.OSX.Mokes – can steal all your keystrokes, access all your files, capture whatever you’re looking at on your screen and record or transmit all your audio conversations on services like Skype.

Essentially, if you’re tricked into installing it, the backdoor allows the attacker to execute arbitrary commands on your computer, which could include downloading and installing more malware or ransomware without your knowledge.

That could actually be how the Mokes malware makes its way on to Macs in the first place. As only the binary file was found by researchers, they can only speculate as to how infection happens in the first place, they said.

Traditionally, Macs have been considered less prone to malware and viruses than Windows or Linux machines, but it’s a simple numbers game for nefarious software makers. As more Macs are now in use, we’re only going to see more attacks targeted at machines running OS X.
