Apple has released the Gold Master version of Mac OS X Mountain Lion to devs, letting them get a head start on optimising apps for the system. The latest version of the OS will be available later this month, for $19.99.

The latest version of Mac OS, dubbed Mountain Lion, is nearing release - and is already available to developers. This version of the software will bring elements of iOS to the Mac desktop OS, including a new notifications system, Game Center support and iPhone-style reminders. Mountain Lion was officially unveiled last month at WWDC 2012, where most of its key features were also teased. Apple says there are over 200 in total.

As has become the standard for Mac OS software updates, the cost of entry is pretty low - just $19.99 in the US.

Other features that will be introduced in Mountain Lion include AirPlay Mirroring from a range of devices including home cinema receivers such as those of Denon's AVR range and - of course - the Apple TV box, and full Facebook integration. The update will be available from the Mac App Store later this month.
