Rumours of a Gears of War film have been doing the rounds for years, but now the franchise is officially going to hit the big screen.
As Variety reports, during a livestream for the upcoming Gears of War 4, studio head of developer The Coalition, Rod Fegusson revealed Universal will produce the film version of the popular game.
Producers Dylan Clark (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Scott Stuber (Ted) are attached to the project, but it remains unclear just what part of the Gears universe the film will be based on.

Gears of War 4 launches next week
Many will expect to see the original Gears cast, led by Marcus Fenix, in the franchise’s film debut, but details are non-existent at this time.
Fergusson told Variety: “As a way to support the franchise the next logical step was to make the movie.
“We’d done comics and novels in the past but the opportunity to work with Universal to bring the movie to life was perfect.”
The developer also explained how other video game adaptations have failed because the film-makers have tried to make ‘a movie for gamers’.
Whatever that means, we’re expecting the Gears film to expand upon the game’s lore, and possibly introduce new characters. We’re still hoping Fenix crops up though.
News of the film adaptation comes as fans of the series prepare to delve back into the Gears universe with Gears of War 4, set to launch on the Xbox One, Xbox One S, and PC on October 11.
The Ultimate Edition of the game, which costs an eye-watering £79.99, allows players to gain early access from tomorrow.
As of now, there’s no further information on the film version of Gears, so we’ll have to wait for a release date.
