Liverpool FC’s dramatic late victory over Borussia Dortmund on Thursday Night is now the most tweeted about event in the UK this year.

At the final whistle of the Europa League Quarter Final, which the Reds won 5-4 on aggregate courtesy of a last minute winner, a flurry of 56,000 related tweets were posted per minute.

That tally surpassed Adele’s BRIT Awards coronation back in February.

A couple of minutes earlier, a headed goal from Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren also amassed 53,000 tweets-per-minute, making it the third biggest Twitter event in the UK this year.

A total of 2 million related tweets were send during the match, which has already entered folklore.

A Twitter spokesperson said (via LiverpoolEcho): “The moment the final whistle blew and Liverpool emerged 4-3 winners over Dortmund became the most-Tweeted about moment in a UK event so far this year, with a peak of 56,000 tweets-per-minute.”

However, it’ll take a lot more Oscar-worthy drama before LFC can overhaul the global leader for 2016.

Leonardo Di Caprio’s Oscar’s acceptance speech netted 440,000 tweets-per-minute.

The all-time record is the 618,725 tweets posted in the 60 seconds after the final whistle of the 2014 World Cup Final.
