Live action Uncharted film coming June 2016

Sony has announced that it will release a live action film based on the Uncharted games franchise on June 10, 2016.

Seth Gordon has been named as the man responsible for bringing the exploits of cocky adventurer Nathan Drake to the big screen. Given that Gordon was responsible for beloved games documentary The King of Kong, the franchise would appear to be in capable hands – or at least the hands of someone with some understanding of the medium.

Of course, Gordon also made Horrible Bosses. Make of that what you will.

There’s no news as yet regarding casting, so we won’t know who has the formidable task of representing one of the best loved video game characters of the past seven years. As long as it isn’t Mark “Marky Mark” Wahlberg, as was rumoured at one point, we’ll be reasonably happy.

The screenplay is being written by David Guggenheim, who seems to specialise in runny-shooty films like Safe House and Stolen. Here’s hoping he can pick up on the knock-about humour the game series is shot through with.

There have been five Uncharted games to date. The series kicked off on PS3 in 2007 with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which established the signature blend of third person action, light platforming puzzles, and stunning cinematic set pieces.

The series kicked on through two more PS3 iterations, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (which is generally considered to be the best) and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

It took a brief diversion to Sony’s PS Vita handheld in 2011 for Uncharted: Golden Abyss, as well as for the somewhat odd card battler Uncharted: Fight for Fortune in 2012.

Then, last year, the announcement came that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (pictured) would launch in 2015 for PS4.

All of which would seem to set up the 2016 movie perfectly, barring any critical slips.
