Xbox fans left in the dark

The Xbox One is a year old, and to celebrate, Microsoft has given away free copies of Limbo.

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson told us: “We’re looking forward to launching ‘Limbo’ on Xbox One. As a thank you to our earliest adopters, fans who played their Xbox One the first weekend of launch received early, free access to the game. ‘Limbo’ will also be available for purchase via the Xbox Game Store soon.” Original story follows.

An unknown number of Xbox One owners received a code over the weekend that snagged them a free copy of the game. Microsoft has kept mum so far, but it's thought they were sent to anyone with an Xbox One Day One achievement, i.e. anyone who bought a Day One-branded version of the console.

Other reports suggest the game was sent to anyone who bought their console before November 11 of this year, who is 17 years old or over, and who has played their Xbox One for more than 10 hours.

At least, that's according to Major Nelson's blog announcing a raft of gifts to say thank you to customers. Though Limbo isn't mentioned among them. Microsoft has dished out new backgrounds, free rentals, watches, posters, free memberships, and other goodies, some of which are sent out at random.

We've contacted Microsoft for confirmation of who received a free copy of Limbo and will update this story if we hear back.

Limbo was originally released on Xbox 360 back in 2010, and is yet to be announced for Xbox One, so the gifting was a welcome surprise. It received critical acclaim, and came to other platforms including PS Vita and iOS.

Sales of the Xbox One recently passed 1 million in the UK. The console has outsold the PS4 for the last three weeks, though Sony's machine is still out in front, passing the million mark in the UK back in September.

I have had an Xbox one since March, I'm definitely over 17, and have put in more than 10 hours on it over this weekend alone, but all I got was a downloadable poster. Ah well :)

It should be about the games

Yep, same here. Bought mine in May, played it non-stop and got the poster as well. I know lots of people have been given a code but, sadly, I wasn't one of them.

I am a day one buyer and on 11/22/14 i got a message from Xbox saying that i will receive a game code for Limbo when it released, the next day I got a similar message but with the code. The game is no on the "coming soon" section of the store and when I viewed game details it says to be released 12/1/2014 It is weird but I am thinking that Day One buyers get the game a few weeks before every one else. I wonder If the game will be free for others or around $5 or so.
