LG V20 ‘Shattergate’: Is there a problem with the phone’s camera glass?

As Samsung struggles to recover from the Note 7 debacle, a new smartphone controversy might be just around the corner.

Several reports of the LG V20’s camera glass shattering after small drops, scratches, or even as a result of simply putting the phone down, have emerged.

A Reddit thread started by user xAmorphous (via Pocketnow) has rounded up many of the cases, including JerryRigEverything’s stress test video (below) which shows the glass covering the camera unit shattering after a scratch test.

The thread contains six other reports of similar shatters, one of which was seemingly caused by leaving the torch on for 30 minutes, while another user claims to have simply set the phone on a desk without a case.

Another user on the AndroidCentral forums experienced the glass covering the camera shattering after dropping the phone – the handset was in an Otterbox case:

“It fell 2.5 feet on the carpet. It went straight down and landed with the front screen face down. I did not panic because the V20 was in the Otterbox Defender case. (even without a case, I figured falling 2.5 feet on carpet wouldn’t have done any damage).

“…Imagine my shocked [sic] when I went to pick it up and noticed that the rear camera glass was cracked.”

Similar reports of the rear camera glass smashing on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge surfaced around the phones’ launch, but there doesn’t seem to be any recent instances.

The LG V20, which is currently only available in the US, comes with MIL-STD-810 shock-resistance certification, so certainly shouldn’t experience this kind of problem due to scratches on the camera module glass.

Whether this is just an issue with a few handsets, or more widespread remains unclear for the time being. TrustedReviews has contacted LG for comment.
