LG Tone Platinum wireless headphones are straight out of Star Trek

Would you wear it?

Mobile World Congress doesn't kick off until Sunday, but already LG has revealed what it has in store. We've seen the G5 (well, its case, anyway) and two mid-range smartphones, and now comes a pair of headphones that looks straight out of Star Trek.

The LG Tone Platinum isn't your usual pair of Bluetooth headphones. It comes with a strange case that sits around your neck, sort of like a necklace (albeit one made of plastic). The actual in-ear headphones are housed inside this, and the cord extends to reach your ears. We would imagine the case would be constantly pulling them down, so we're not sure how comfortable they would be to wear. Though we haven't tried them yet, so can't say for certain.

It's made with hi-fi company Harmon Kardon, and features the Bluetooth aptX codec, meaning it can take high-res audio without any loss in quality. That should mean you get CD-like quality through the earbuds.

Each also features noise-cancelling microphones to block out background noise. And it doubles as a handsfree kit, so you can make calls without fishing your phone out of your pocket or bag.

Also onboard is LG's Voice Command technology, which lets you handle incoming calls just by speaking.

It will go on sale in the US in March, and come to Europe, Asia and Latin America soon after. Check back for an ears-on review at MWC next week.

I have the LG Tone 810 series. At first glance, these look nearly the same in specs but with a black case instead. I love my 810s. The retractable in-ear buds give me no issues at all, are comfortable to wear around the neck and sound great with the JBL aptX sound. I wear them around work and home and even occasionally while sleeping. Bluetooth works very well but with my somewhat larger neck, sometimes when I bend my head down I block the Bluetooth receiver portion which will cut the sound. Not a huge deal though. The only improvement I would like to see is a better microphone in a better location so when I talk on either my work cell phone or personal cell phone (syncs to both at the same time!), I am heard better. Perhaps the mic is better on this version.

Keep up the good work LG!

This is not very different from existing LG Tone earphones (related to the "case" and retractable cable). The main areas that are new are things like noise cancellation.

Appreciate the news, but it would help if you could compare it to previous products that you can try on and test.

2 microphones built in on this model for better noise cancellation and clearer reproduction of voice.

I have to say- for a Website called Trusted Reviews- it is weird to me that while this isn't really a review it comes up when you search review and the appear to wait until ~bottom of the paragraph to announce- "Though we haven't tried them yet, so can't say for certain".

It just kind of drives me nuts when sites do this sort of bait and switch- A review website that posts an article about a product but it isn't a review and they haven't tried it seems to be one of those things that could easily make the world shift its axis or reverse rotation.

It would be super cool if they had actually tried them at all. Maybe I am too picky but for a site called Trusted Reviews to not actually try a product but still post an article seems like a cart before the horse thing.
