LG to launch Surface Pro-battling hybrid

LG is gearing up to take on the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 with a new tablet-laptop hybrid.

The currently unnamed device will ship as a tablet with its own dedicated detachable keyboard.

Inside will be Intel’s fourth-generation core processor, alongside SSD storage for nippy file access.

There’s also talk of a touchpad system being built into the keyboard, making the mystery LG lap-slate a far more formidable rival hybrid.

LG already has a hybrid system – the Tab-Book – which saw a new version released earlier this year, however sales disappointed.

The South Korean firm hopes to rectify its tablet line-up’s lacklustre balance sheet with this new, premium kit.

According to Cnet, an LG spokesperson said: “Sales records of the Tab-Book were so-so”, although he refused to point to a date for the new hybrid launch.

It’s not clear what system the upcoming device will run on. The Tab-Book originally ran off Windows, although this year’s variant of the device made use of Android instead.

While Android could be a smart move for a firm hoping to compete with better-marketed Microsoft fare, Windows 10 will offer cross-platform unification – a hard-to-resist treat for OEMs building hybrids.

LG has seen much success with its smartphones in recent years, with the LG G3 receiving across-the-board success. The firm now hopes to translate this sales boon to tablets too.
