LG talks down rival TVs as ‘just LED’

LG says rival TV firms simply can’t compete with its OLED line-up thanks to the core technology difference.

With the Korean manufacturer ramping up its OLED TV production in 2015, the company has referred to rival manufacturers’ offerings as ‘just LED’.

Speaking with TrustedReviews on the next wave of TV progression, Andy McKay, LG’s UK commercial director, said: “There’s been such a stance taken by everybody else on whether it’s with quantum dot, whether it’s with perhaps [Samsung’s] S-UHD, a competing product.”

“They’re all just LED TVs though. They’re all to do with colour enhancements, whereas OLED is a different technology.”

LG started producing its OLED panels back in 2010, and began flogging them in TV form across the UK just two years ago.

OLED stands for ‘organic light-emitting diode’, which basically means that the TV panel is made up of lots of crystals that produce their own light.

This is in contrast to conventional LED TVs, which make use of a backlight behind the display crystals to show images.

“Any LED TV screen, OLED refreshes 1000 times faster, so you have ultimate motion clarity,” said McKay, talking up LG’s OLED panel line-up.

“We have a product with true wide-angle viewing. You stand with any LED screen to the side and you’ll notice the sharper you are, there’ll be some washout with the screen. You won’t get that with an OLED.”

He also warned over 4K, pointing out that increased resolution on LED TVs wouldn’t improve picture quality to the standard of OLED.

“Well we have a technology difference. And 4K, do remember 4K moving on from 1080p is just an enhancement of LED technology.”

Samsung showed off its brand new S-UHD line-up of TVs at this year’s CES event, talking up the fare as offering 64 times better colour expression than normal TVs.

Despite the improvements, they still fall foul of LED design, specifically suffering less impressive viewing angles and an inability to produce true black.
