LG patents smartphone that slaps around your wrist

LG bracelet phone

LG has patented a new type of smartphone that wraps around your wrist just like a bracelet.

The patent describes a very thin smartphone that can flex and bend with a severe curve.

This then attaches to an actual bracelet on your wrist, which appears to have a locking mechanism to keep the smartphone attached.

There’s not a lot of technical information offered in the patent, which means we have no idea of knowing just how realistic LG’s concept is.

It’s also worth mentioning that this mystery device may never actually make it to market, such is the nature of patents.

What should be noted, however, is that the patent is clearly an attempt by LG to bridge the gap between smartphones and wearables.

That's because wearables and smartphones arguably compete on some levels. The Apple Watch, for instance, means users won’t need to use their iPhones so much.

If LG can create a device that fulfils both product categories, it can save consumers cash and put a stopper on the smartphone/wearables rivalry.

This isn’t the first interest LG has shown in flexible displays; it’s already incorporated a curved screen on the LG G Flex 2 smartphone.

We also saw an LG Display product roadmap revealed last year, which claimed that more severe screen flexibility – foldable and rollable smartphones, for instance – could be here in the next few years.
