LG UK Marketing Manager for Digital Displays, George Mead, has countered rumours arising from comments by an LG executive that the company might be planning a withdrawal from the plasma market.
Lee Gyu-hong, president of LG Electronics Japan, had commented that the company might consider dropping plasmas to aid profitability in the current weak financial climate. Mead agreed that the plasma market has been somewhat shaken up recently – largely owing to Pioneer’s decision to abandon it – saying: “We appreciate that the global market for plasma TVs is undergoing some major changes which are, of course, being discussed at LG’s global headquarters.”
However, Mead insists that “LG Electronics UK has no intention to withdraw from the plasma TV market.” Mead added that LG has “recently implemented a bespoke strategy to promote and market plasma TVs here in the UK. The development of new technologies including our THX certification is a strong indication of the growth opportunities for plasma TVs in the UK market.”
It’s worth considering that even if LG plans to continue to distribute plasmas in the UK, that’s no indication it will do so in every territory, to the extent perhaps of following Philips’ lead of outsourcing its TV business in some territories. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
