LG has announced the start of sales for its whopping new 105-inch curved 5K TV. Yes, we said 5K rather than 4K.
First revealed at CES in January, The LG 105UC9 (to give the monstrous TV its proper name) is wider than other UHD TV sets you may have seen before. A cinema-like 21:9 aspect ratio means that there are extra horizontal pixels, producing a 5120 x 2160 resolution.
In other words, it’s 5K, not 4K.
As mentioned, that 105-inch display continues the trend for curved displays. Besides an immersive picture, you also get built-in virtual surround sound thanks to handy built-in 7.2 channel speaker system. That’s thanks to a team-up with audio specialist Harmon Kardon.
As for the software, the LG 105UC9 runs on the webOS platform, so it should be far more intuitive and fluid to use than your average smart TV.
According to LG‘s In-kyu Lee, “The vision behind LG’s 105-inch 21:9 Curved Ultra HD TV was to bring the movie theatre into the living room.”
We think LG will achieve the goal it set itself here. With a screen of that size, it will probably feel like a large brick building has been deposited in front of your sofa.
The LG 105UC9 is now available for pre-order in South Korea, and will cost an eye watering 120 million won, which translates to a little under £69,000. It’ll start shipping – hopefully very carefully – in a few days.
As for a wider global release, LG reckons that this will occur during the fourth quarter.
