LG GPay could rival Apple, Google and Samsung mobile payments

Everyone and their aunt is setting up their own mobile payments services these days.

Now it look like LG is readying up a payment platform to compete with mobile rivals.

The South Korean tech giant has filed for the “GPay” trademark with the US Trademark and Patent Office, as spotted by VentureBeat.

The filing in question is related to “smart phones”, “mobile phones”, “transmission of data” and “electronic wearable units”.

Unfortunately, no further details are given in the filing, so there’s no way of verifying LG’s intended course of action.

However, based on the apparent name of the mystery service, it seems probable that LG is working on its own mobile payments service.

A number of technology giants have already launched their own offerings. Examples include Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google’s Android Pay.

Customers are increasingly willing to make payments via contactless methods, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see LG banking on the trend.

We contacted LG for comment. This was the response: “It is the policy of LG not to comment on rumours or speculation.”
