Despite the LG G Watch being just a matter of weeks old, the Korean manufacturer is reportedly working on a new smartwatch offering.
Being tentatively tipped as the LG G Watch 2, the unconfirmed smartwatch has been reported to be a pre-emptive rival to the much mooted Apple iWatch.
“LG Electronics was working on a September release for the new smartwatch alongside Google’s wearable platform,” a claimed LG official reportedly told The Korea Times. “
Although adding “The debuts of the smartwatch will be coming at the IFA,” it is currently unclear if the wearable will be showcased publically or behind closed doors.
With the Moto 360 expected to be dated for release on September 4, the second-gen LG watch could be unveiled within days of new Sony and Samsung smartwatches.
While little is currently known about the unofficial smartwatch, it has been suggested that the new device could make LG’s first foray into round wearables.
The Korean manufacturer is reportedly bringing together expertise from all of its key departments, with LG Display, LG Innotek and LG Chem all said to have been roped into the project.
It has also been claimed that LG could partner with a dedicated watch maker to produce the device.
The anonymous tipster stated: “LG Electronics is being approached by a lot of authoritative watchmakers for strategic collaboration.
“They need us and LG also wants to use their well-known brand image to boost the awareness of our smartwatches in key target markets.”
IFA 2014 runs between September 5 and 10, with press days to precede the show on September 3 and 4.
