LG: Flexible phones are the ‘future of the industry’

Following the recent launch of the LG G Flex, the Korean manufactuer has suggested that bendable handsets are here to stay, claiming that flexible phones are “the future of the industry.”

With the LG G Flex having landed late last year as the world’s first consumer available flexible phone, boasting a vertical bend that can be straightened when pressure is applied, LG has now suggested that it expects the technology to become a future industry standard.

“Do we see flexible phones as the future of the industry? The quick answer is yes,” Frank Lee, LG’s Head of Mobile Communications said speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews.

Suggesting that the LG G Flex could be the first of many flexible phones, not only from LG itself but the wider industry, he added: “For so long we have accepted the current form factor and there have been a lot of critics where people have been asking the questions of what’s next. This is just a glimpse of what could be.”

While standard candybar handset designs have been the norm for some time, the company believes the industry is on the cusp of a major change in this area. With the LG G Flex having been joined on sale by the horizontally curved Samsung Galaxy Round, it appears this movement has already state.

While it has claimed that flexible phones are the future, LG has failed to rule out any other possibilities for how future phones might develop.

Lee stated: “Our design teams and our engineering teams are looking at the possibilities and looking at how the smartphone is going to evolve in terms of form factor.”

Reverting back to flexible phones and the LG G Flex, he concluded: “This is just a demonstration of really what the future is going to be like.”

The LG G Flex is already available for purchase in LG’s native Korea. Although pricing has yet to be confirmed, the company has announced that the phone will be rolled out across the UK and the US early this year.
