LG creates ‘truly flexible’ OLED lighting panel

LG has finally developed what is described as ‘truly flexible’ P-OLED lighting panels, according to a new report.

Oled-Display.net says LG Chem – the company’s chemical division – has managed to produce a hyper-flexible backlight-free panel.

“The current bendable OLED lighting modules are thin, glass-based, and can only provide a limited bending of 75mm,” reads the report.

“The new, completely flexible, plastic-based panels increased the bending radius flexibility to 30mm, which also eliminates the danger of the panel shattering when excessive force is applied.”

LG reportedly claimed that the main problem of switching from glass to plastic was to maintain efficiency, luminance, and colour rendering index.

The new OLED panels offer 60-lumens per watt efficiency, 75-lumens brightness, and retail at $250 (around £165) per panel, due for production in July.

So what does this mean for the average consumer? Well it’s no secret that LG has big plans for mobile screen tech, however these new OLED panels are designed for simple lighting purposes right now.

However, LG’s display roadmap, unveiled last year, revealed that the South Korean firm hoped to have mobile devices making use of rollable/foldable screens by 2017.

This advancement in P-OLED panels could eventually pave the way for an ultra-flex version of the LG G Flex 2 in a few years time.
