LG is to show off what it’s calling The “world’s first 21:9 curved IPS ultra wide monitor” at this year’s IFA show.
The South Korean tech company has become one of the leading early proponents of curved television sets. Now it’s looking to bring the immersive qualities of curved screen technology to your desktop.
According to a recent LG press release, the 34-inch LG 34UC97 will be “The world’s first monitor to incorporate a curved IPS screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio.”
That 21:9 aspect ratio, which LG dubs “Ultrawide,” is the same as can be found at your local cinema. In other words, it’s perfect for playing Hollywood blockbusters as they were intended.
In the case of a monitor, of course, this widescreen aspect ratio will be even more useful. Users will be able to stack even more windows and applications side-by-side, potentially lessening the need for additional regular monitors.
We can also see how the LG 34UC97’s curved display might actually be more practical on a monitor, thanks to the fact that users will be placed centrally and close-up on each occasion. The main (only?) point of curved screens, after all, is to give an immersive wrap-around effect.
This is a seriously well kitted out monitor even without these two headline features. It’s got a 3440 x 1440 Quad HD resolution, and Thunderbolt 2 connectors for daisy chaining and data transfer speeds of up to four times that of USB 3.0. It also comes with a 7W stereo speaker system.
LG will be showing off two other monitors at IFA 2014 in addition to the 34UC97: the 4K 31-inch LG 31MU97, and the LG 24GM77 gaming monitor with a 144Hz refresh rate.
IFA 2014 takes place in Berlin from September 5 to September 10.
