LG has announced that it will be unveiling a range of 4K Ultra HD TV sets utilising quantum dot LCD technology at CES 2015.
The Korean company’s advantageous position in OLED TV production has been much publicised, but it seems the company will also be turning to advanced LCD options next year.
LG has announced that it will be showing off its new quantum dot TV range at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas from January 6.
These quantum dot TVs “will be available in 2015 to complement LG’s other ULTRA HD TV and OLED TV offering.”
Quantum dot technology offers a wider colour palette and superior colour saturation than regular LCD panels. It does so by “harnessing nano crystals that range in size from 2 to 10 nanometers.”
Each tiny quantum dot emits a different colour depending on its size. This essentially negates the need for white LEDs, which tend to have a negative impact on colour saturation.
It’s not a new technology by any means. Sony has been using it in its own Triluminous brand of TV sets for some time now, while Amazon also uses it in its Kindle Fire HDX tablets.
Samsung has announced this year that it will be holding off on OLED TV development, which many felt would be the next big thing in TV technology, going into 2015. Instead, it too will turn to quantum dot LCD technology to improve its TV offerings.
This had seemingly left the OLED field entirely to LG, as the company is said to be several years ahead of its great local rival in being able to produce affordable OLED panels.
However, this latest announcement shows that OLED isn’t quite ready for the masses just yet.
