The roads might be icy this winter, but what about your wheels?

Lexus has built a car that uses wheels made entirely of ice – yes, actual frozen water.

The surprising part of the story is that the car actually works, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘driving on ice’.

The project to build the wheels took three months to complete, and will be aired in a TV programme called ‘A Frozen Christmas’ on Channel 4 this winter.

The wheels were actually built by London-based Hamilton Ice Sculptors, who worked with Lexus to fit the frozen water to a real Lexus NX.

The car itself was also deep-frozen and stored for five days at -30 degress Celcius, before being driven down a London road.

“Creating amazing is what Lexus is about,” says Richard Balshaw, Lexus Director. “Projects such as our hoverboard, the origami-inspired cardboard car and now a dazzling set of fully functioning ice wheels, demonstrate how we use advanced technologies and the best craftsmanship traditions to achieve outstanding results.”

“That’s not just for eye-catching one-off projects, but for the cars we deliver to our customers, too,” he adds.
