Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon launched as “lightest” 14-inch Ultrabook

Lenovo has launched the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, which it is calling the world’s lightest 14-inch Ultrabook.

Built from Carbon Fiber, the ThinkPad 8 is just 1.27kg in weight and should be fairly indestructible seeing as its the same material used for aeroplanes and racing cars.

“Lenovo continues to push the boundaries of design and technology as we aspire to create the best products in the market,” said Pete Hortensius, SVP and President of Lenovo’s Think Business Group. “The ThinkPad X1 Carbon delivers a stunning user experience with the best professional display and new interactive methods and represents another step in our PC plus journey.”

Lenovo also announced the Lenovo ThinkPad 8. This tablet is made from aluminium and aims to be the tablet for professionals, with three modes to accommodate to all user needs.

The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon offers an Intel Haswell processor, with configurations up to Intel Core i7 with Intel HD Graphics 5000.

The 14-inch IPS display with new ColourBurst technology has resolution options up to 2560 x 1440p Full HD and runs the latest Windows 8.1.

You can have up to 8GB of RAM and an SSD up to 512GB, while Lenovo promises a 9 hour battery life for the X1 Carbon.

The X1 Carbon offers 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC connectivity and there’s also 4G LTE support to boot. In terms of ports, you’ll get two USB 3.0, a full size HDMI and native ethernet support.

Lenovo has also introduced an adaptive keyboard with the X1 Carbon, which is a row of backlit, touch sensitive keys that change function according to the application currently open. This could well be a very handy new feature to have at your fingertips.

The Lenovo ThinkPad 8 will be available in late January, with prices starting at $1299 (£795).

The ThinkPad 8 is a professional tablet with an 8.3-inch 1920 x 1200p Full HD display. You can connect it to a keyboard and display, or simply use it tablet mode for the more conventional tablet experience.

It is powered by an Intel Bay Trail quad-core processor, and offers up to 128GB of internal storage.

Running Windows 8 Pro, the ThinkPad 8 is definitely geared towards business users and has 4G LTE connectivity.

The convertible ThinkPad 8 tablet will be able to order in late January, with the basic model price starting at $399 (£244). The highest spec model will start at $429 (£260).
